Dorothea Jane Linn

Dorothea J. (Jane) Linn died early Sunday August 20, 2006, at Mountain View Manor where she had been under the care of Granite Mountain Hospice.   Jane was born September 1, 1922, in New Kensington, Pa. Daughter of Herbert H. and Ruth A. Linn.  She attended Bethany College (l940-1942) and received a Bachelor of Science Degree from the University of Pittsburgh in 1944.  She was certified by the D.T. Watson School of Physiatrists in 1945 in preparation for a career as a physical therapist with the Veterans Administration treating survivors of World War II, the Korean and Vietnam Wars.  She was appointed Staff Physical Therapist at the VA Hospital at Aspinwall, Pa., and Supervisory Physical Therapist from 1946-1947. In 1947 she was appointed Chief Physical Therapist at the Oakland VA Hospital in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania where she served with distinction until her retirement in 1975.   Jane was committed to serving the needs of war veterans and was instrumental in devising new means of treating and rehabilitating those who had lost limbs in combat.   In recognition of her contributions to the education of the physical therapy students in the Department of Physical Therapy, School of Health Related Professions, University of Pittsburgh, through her supervision of their learning experience   in clinical education, and her teaching responsibilities to the Department, she received a clinical faculty appointment.   After her retirement in 1975 she moved to Pine Lakes in Prescott, Arizona, where she enjoyed her retirement years with family and friends and her beloved dog, Cricket.  Jane had a quick wit and a wonderful sense of humor.  She loved her family and reveled in their successes.  Her activities were somewhat limited after a stroke in 1998.  Her dear friend, Phyllis Kovar assisted her these last years and remains a cherished friend of Jane?s family.   Jane is survived by her three sisters, Margaret (Peggy) Smith of Prescott; Harriett Rath and her husband, Donald of Pittsburgh, Pa; Lois Orr of Robbinsdale, Minn; and a brother Theodore Linn and his wife, Carol of Canton, New York.  She is also survived by many nieces and nephews in whom she maintained a keen interest.  She was predeceased by her parents, her brothers, William E. and Herbert H. Jr., and her sister Ruth Wiles.   A family graveside service will be held in Rockland, Pa.   In lieu of flowers, gifts may be made to the Veterans of Foreign Wars, The Yavapai Humane Society or the Granite Mountain Hospice.   A private cremation service will be held at Arizona Wakelin Bradshaw Chapel, Prescott Valley, Arizona.   Arizona Ruffner Wakelin assisted the family with final arrangements.
