On Tuesday, October 2, 2018, Jean Elizabeth Myers, beloved mother, friend, and world-traveler passed away at age 83. For over a year Jean fought a good fight against lung cancer with the help of doctors, friends, family, and Maggies Hospice in Prescott, Arizona.
Born in Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania, Jean passed away in Prescott, Arizona at Marley House surrounded by her children. She lived most of her wonderful life in Arizona with residency in Pennsylvania, New Mexico and Virginia. She was admired and best-known for her world travels and multi-day cruises in the last decades of her life.
Jean Myers is survived by her three children; Amy Van Winkle of Prescott, AZ, Thomas Van Winkle of San Diego, CA and Robert Van Winkle of Fort Myers, FL. Jean’s grandchild, Olivia Elizabeth Van Winkle and her mother Michelle both of Garden Grove, CA. She is also survived by her cousins David Lloyd of San Francisco, CA, Susan Smith of Scottsdale, AZ, Margaret McWilliams of Phoenix, AZ and Betty Schroeder of Scottsdale, AZ.
Jean Myers had a long and successful career in Arizona education. She worked in Flagstaff, Ajo, Gilbert, Mesa and Prescott. Jean retired in 1991 as Assistant Superintendent of Schools in Prescott, AZ. After retirement, she moved to Virginia and worked as a docent at Monticello in Charlottesville, Virginia. She returned to Arizona and volunteered at Sky Harbor Airport, The Scottsdale Center for the Arts, the Museum of the West in Scottsdale, and stood many hours by her information cart in downtown Scottsdale greeting tourists on behalf of the city.
Jean inspired her friends and family with her zest for life and travel. She set off with friends but was never hesitant to book a trip on her own. Jean was never happier than watching “sail-away” from the top deck of a cruise ship. One of her favorite quotes came to her from her mother, Alice Elizabeth Nicely, who lived by the words from Edna St. Vincent Millay… “yet there isn’t a train I wouldn’t take.”
She will be missed forever as she boards the train one last time. A celebration of Jean’s life will be held at the social room of Las Fuentes Resort Village, 1035 Scott Dr. Prescott, AZ on Saturday, October 27th, 2018 at 1:00 pm.
