In Loving Memory of Alfred E. Smith III

Some people spend their lives searching for peace. Alfred E. Smith III found his in service, in nature, in music, and in the quiet moments that reminded him what truly mattered.

Born and raised in Gary, Indiana, Alfred carried with him the values of hard work, resilience, and loyalty throughout his life. He graduated from Horace Mann High School in 1976, during the United States Bicentennial year. Immediately following graduation, he answered the call to serve his country by enlisting in the United States Marine Corps, beginning a distinguished military career that would take him around the world.

As a Marine Security Guard, Alfred was entrusted with protecting United States embassies in Paris, France, and Sri Lanka, proudly representing his country with professionalism, integrity, and honor. His service also included assignments at Marine Corps Base Camp Kinser in Okinawa, Japan; Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton in Oceanside, California; and Korea. He served during Operation Desert Storm before retiring honorably from the Marine Corps with the rank of Staff Sergeant (E-6).

Alfred continued his career with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, where he found purpose in caring for fellow veterans with the same integrity and spirit that guided him throughout his military service.

A lifelong believer in personal growth, Alfred later earned a degree from Grand Canyon University, reflecting his commitment to learning and continued service.

While his professional life reflected a commitment to serving others, his heart belonged to the ranch he built in Paulden, Arizona. There, surrounded by the quiet beauty of nature, he found his greatest peace. Caring for his 23 beloved animals, tending the land, and spending time outdoors brought him immense happiness. Whether watching wildlife, caring for the creatures that depended on him, or simply soaking in the stillness of the Arizona landscape, Alfred found joy in life's simplest moments.

Music was another lifelong passion. A gifted musician, he found peace in every note he played. Whether performing for others or simply playing for himself, music became one of the purest expressions of who he was-a language that often spoke louder than words.

His connection to his American Indian heritage and spirituality became an important part of his life, grounding him and shaping the way he viewed the world-with respect for the earth, gratitude for each day, and a deep appreciation for the interconnectedness of all living things.

To know Alfred was to experience someone who lived authentically and without pretense. He commanded every room with his presence, captivated people with his stories, and had a one-of-a-kind sense of humor. He leaves behind countless memories that will continue to bring laughter, comfort, and inspiration to all who knew him.

Alfred shared the later years of his life with his dear friend and devoted companion, Lynda, who brought him companionship, comfort, and happiness.

Above all else, Alfred was a devoted father whose love, wisdom, and strength shaped the lives of his children. He is lovingly survived by his children: Alfred Edward Smith IV; Lauren Elizabeth (Smith) Battistoni (Vincent); Rachael Meleah Smith; James Elliot Smith; Quentin Alexander Smith; Bryce Jordan Smith; Olivia Nichole Smith; Yon Phillip ("Peewee") Smith; Avery Zhaine Gutierrez; Katyla Mae Smith; and Ashley Alicia Reeves.

He was a proud and loving grandfather to Ava; Lana ("Maggie"); Aubrey; Alijah; Emric; Rowan; and Penelope, each of whom brought him tremendous pride and immeasurable joy.

He is also survived by his siblings: Cora E. Joiner (Darnel); Jean E. Wilkinson; Andre E. Smith; Thomas I. Crowe (Sharell); Sabrina L. Crowe; and Andre Stafford (LaWanda), along with many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends whose lives were enriched by knowing him.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Alfred and Bobbie Jean, and his sisters, Analida Carmen Smith and Cynthia Smith.

There are no words that can fully express the heartache of losing Alfred. Though his physical presence is gone, his spirit remains-in the peaceful stillness of the outdoors, in every melody that stirs the soul, in every act of service, and in the stories, laughter, and love he leaves behind.
