It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Carolyn Vaugh Gonsalves, a devoted educator, cherished friend, and beloved sister, who left us on April 7, 2026, in Prescott, Arizona. Born on October 31, 1929, in La Jolla, California, Carolyn’s life was a testament to dedication, creativity, and kindness.
Carolyn's passionate journey of education began after she graduated from St. Mary's College in Brentwood, California, earning her Bachelor's degree along with lifetime teaching credentials. In 1950, she entered the St. Joseph of Carondelet Community, marking the beginning of a remarkable 36-year career as an elementary and junior high school teacher. Her classrooms were places of wonder and growth, where she poured her heart into every lesson. Carolyn was known for going above and beyond, crafting creative plans that kindled the imagination and curiosity of her students. Teaching was not just a profession for her; it was a calling she embraced with unwavering love and devotion.
Beyond the classroom, Carolyn was a woman of diverse interests and talents. She found joy in reading, filling her mind with stories and knowledge. Music was a lifelong companion, whether she was playing the piano or organ, or simply listening to melodies that lifted her spirit. Her adventurous side shone through in horseback riding, and her artistic soul thrived in creating beautiful works of art. These passions enriched her life and those around her, reflecting a spirit that was vibrant and tender.
Carolyn’s personal life was marked by meaningful relationships and deep bonds. She was predeceased by her husband, Joseph Gonsalves, and her parents, Ada and Lyle Ramsay. Surviving her are her dear brother, David Ramsay, and close friends Joan Terwilliger and Gloria Snider, whose lives were deeply touched by Carolyn’s warmth and generosity.
The community will gather to honor Carolyn’s memory on April 30, 2026, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Prescott. The Rosary will begin at 10:15 a.m., followed by a Mass at 11:00 a.m., where family and friends will celebrate the extraordinary life she lived and the love she shared.
Carolyn Vaugh Gonsalves’ legacy is one of selfless service, creativity, and a heart that truly cared for others. Though she will be dearly missed, her spirit will continue to inspire the many lives she touched with her wisdom and compassion.
May she rest in peace, forever remembered and forever loved.
