Curt Sather

Curt Sather, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, mentor, friend, and colleague, passed away on January 4th 2026, leaving behind a legacy defined by faith, service, adventure, and an unwavering commitment to the safety and well‑being of others.

Born with a heart for helping people, Curt lived his life guided by compassion, purpose, and a deep appreciation for the outdoors. Whether offering a hand, sharing hard‑earned wisdom, or telling one of his famously corny jokes, he had a way of making others feel supported, seen, and safe.

Curt lived life to the fullest and was always ready for an adventure. He tackled four‑wheeling challenges across Utah and Colorado’s rugged terrain; hiked, fished, and hunted throughout Alaska; sharpened his marksmanship at a variety of renowned training centers, and chased elk and deer across the mountains of Montana, Idaho, and Arizona, just to name a few. The outdoors wasn’t just a place he loved—it was where he felt most alive and connected.

Faith was the foundation of Curt’s life and the compass that shaped how he loved, worked, and served others. His faith was not just a belief but a daily practice, lived out with quiet conviction and unwavering trust.

Safety wasn’t just his profession—it was his calling. His leadership in developing the Occupational Safety and Health bachelor’s program at the University of Alaska Anchorage stands as a testament to his vision and his unwavering belief in equipping others to return home safely each day. He dedicated countless hours to protecting frontline workers on the North Slope of Alaska while working for Alaska Clean Seas, VECO, ASRC, Kakivik, Oil Search, CONAM, and Santos.

To his family and friends, Curt was a steady, loving presence. To colleagues and students, he was a mentor who led with humility, expertise, and humor. To his grandchildren, he was a source of stories, laughter, and gentle guidance. He leaves behind his wife, Janice Sather; children Heather Ptak (Jeremy Ptak), Kelsey Barrett (Joel Barrett), and Andrew Sather (Sara Sather); his grandchildren Allison Ptak (12), Evan Ptak (6), Josie Barrett (9), and James Barrett (6); his brother, Paul Sather; and his sister‑in‑law, Deanna Murdy, who will forever carry his lessons, his adventurous spirit, and his love in their hearts.

Though he is no longer with us, Curt’s impact endures in every life he touched, every student he inspired, and every workplace that was made safer by his influence. His lifelong commitment to growth, both personally and professionally, inspired everyone who knew him. In lieu of flowers, the family invites donations to the Curt Sather Memorial Scholarship Fund, supporting students in the Occupational Safety and Health program he was instrumental in creating. Contributions will honor Curt’s lifelong commitment to education, safety, and service.
