It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Gregg Gilliam, affectionately known to many as the Gentle Giant. Gregg left us on June 10th, 2024, leaving behind a legacy of kindness, love, and inspiration that will forever be remembered by all who knew him.
Gregg was known for his imposing size, strength, and athleticism, which could be intimidating to those who only saw him from afar. However, those who were fortunate enough to know him understood that he was the epitome of gentleness and kindness, a soul whose heart was as vast as his physical presence.
Beloved by everyone who crossed his path, Gregg's presence was a beacon of warmth and kindness, drawing people towards him with an almost magnetic pull. He was surrounded by an incredible team of caregivers who have been with him for many years and did not just see him as a responsibility, but as family. Their love and dedication to Greg were profound, and it was evident in the care and respect they showed him every day. His care team, full of exceptional human beings, treated their work with him as a calling and not just a job as evidenced by the loving relationships he had with each of them.
Gregg's influence extended far beyond his immediate caregivers. He had an uncanny ability to inspire and positively influence his housemates in ways that even the staff admired. Commanding respect effortlessly, not through words but through his actions and presence, Gregg was intelligent and resourceful. He always found ways to get what he wanted, especially when it came to his favorite treats, chocolates, or anything sweet.
One of Gregg’s greatest joys was being active. He could walk for hours, loved swimming, and exploring—each step a testament to his love for the simple pleasures in life. An exceptional bowler, Gregg often impressed everyone with several strikes in a row. Despite not speaking much, he had a unique talent for recognizing each staff member by their picture when given their name, a small but significant indication of his sharp mind and deep connections with those around him.
Gregg had a deep love for animals, bright colors, and textures, appreciating the vibrancy and variety of the world around him. His meticulous nature was evident in his neatness and organization. He often changed his clothes when he got home and liked his things to be arranged in a certain way, lining them up with precision. This attention to detail reflected his thoughtful and orderly approach to life.
One of the most profound and enduring relationships in Gregg's life was with his mother. Her unwavering love and dedication were the bedrock of his existence. She took on all the guardian responsibilities, made all the important decisions, and maintained a deep and nurturing relationship with Gregg. Her care and commitment were instrumental in shaping the man we all cherished.
Though Gregg often communicated without words, his wisdom spoke volumes. His unspoken wisdom, inner strength, innocence, childlike joy, and appreciation for the simple things in life set an example for all of us. Gregg’s life was a lesson in finding joy in the little moments and in treating everyone with kindness and respect.
In his quiet, unassuming way, Gregg has left an indelible mark on our hearts and minds. He has helped shape our characters for the better, teaching us the true meaning of compassion, patience, and love. While we will miss him dearly, we take comfort in knowing that his spirit and the lessons he imparted will continue to live on within us.
Rest in peace, dear Gregg. Your legacy of love and gentleness will forever be cherished and remembered.
