Hugh Richard Meier

Hugh Richard Meier came into this world May 2, 1935, in New York City, New York. The second son of immigrant parents from Scotland and Germany, he joined brother Tom and was followed by brother Roy and sister Lily. Hugh had a very pleasant childhood growing up in the Bronx and then later Long Island.

Hugh graduated from Hicksville High School in 1953 and enlisted in the Army to be eligible for the GI Bill. After his two-year stint in the Army he returned home to New York, married his high school sweetheart, Claudette, and had a daughter Kim. Together they ran Camp Marlyn in Andover, NH for many years.

His BA from Adelphi and a master’s degree from Queens College in art education set him up for a long career sharing his artistic talents and teaching expertise with art students for many years in NY and NH, finishing his career at Kearsarge Regional High School in Warner, NH.

He was proud to be a member of the National Education Association and to serve as a delegate to the Democratic National Conversation for Paul Simon in 1988.

Marrying the love of his life, Norma, in 1990 made the next 35 years so special. Traveling around the world and the country in an RV, they eventually settled in Prescott, AZ where he was an active member at the Granite Peak Unitarian Universalist Congregation.

Hugh loved teaching and making art. He sculpted, painted and made beautiful jewelry. A member of the Prescott Art Docents he enjoyed hosting a monthly series for kids called Art in the Library.

Preceded in death by brothers Tom and Roy as well as daughter Kim, loved ones left behind are his wife Norma, granddaughter Kelly (spouse Shannon and daughter Sutton, age 5), sister Lily and her family, stepdaughters Pamela Kelley and Kirsten Drozdowski and their families, many cousins, nieces and nephews around the country and in Germany. He also leaves many good friends in New Hampshire, Virginia, New York, and Florida.

Hugh died Monday, August 25th, 2025 at his home.
