It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Jerome S. Welna, known to many, simply as Jerry. A man who exemplified courage, dedication, and service throughout his remarkable life. Jerry departed from this world on July 24, 2024, in Prescott, Arizona, at the age of 100. He was born on September 3, 1923, in Lynch, Nebraska.
Jerry's journey through life was marked by extraordinary achievements and unwavering commitment. He was an accomplished Scientist whose thirst for knowledge and academic excellence led him to earn his Doctorate. Throughout his career, he demonstrated a passion for discovery and a keen intellect that inspired all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Jerry was a man of profound integrity and valor. His military service was a source of great pride for him, and he served his country with honor and distinction. As a WWII Navy Veteran and D-Day Survivor, Bravery and sacrifice embodied the essence of a true American hero. He served as a torpedo crewman on the USS Barton, where his unwavering dedication and courage in the face of adversity earned him the respect and admiration of his comrades.
Dedication to his country and fellow servicemen was evident to his actions both on and off the battlefield. He earned 6 battle medals and 5 battle stars, a testament to his exceptional service and sacrifice. He was always forthcoming and truthful when sharing his experiences with those who sought to learn more about his time in the military.
In addition to his career and military service, Jerry was known for his generous spirit and kind heart. He touched the lives of many with his selfless acts of kindness and compassion. Those who had the privilege of knowing him remember him as a brave and giving person, whose presence brightened the lives of those around him.
Jerry, his life and his service to country, will certainly be remembered by many in our communities. A celebration of life will be conducted at the Heights Church, along with full military honors, with rifle volleys, on sight.
There will be an early viewing from 10:30-10:50 am. Military honors, followed by a celebration of life, will begin promptly at 11:00 am on Saturday, August 31, 2024, at Heights Church, 2121 E. Larry Caldwell Dr, Prescott, AZ 86301. Jerry will receive final placement into the Wall of Honor at Prescott National Cemetery on Thursday, September 5, 2024, at 11:00 am.
