Jerry Ray
Thornberry
Jun 30, 1944 — Oct 5, 2026
Chino Valley
He was generous to the core, the kind of man who would give you the shirt off his back.
Jerry Ray Thornberry, of Prescott, passed away on October 5, 2026, at the age of 82. He was born on June 30, 1944, in Sullivan, Indiana, and will be remembered as a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, and friend whose kindness and warmth left a lasting impression on everyone he met.
Jerry lived a life marked by service, learning, and deep love for his family. He earned a Master’s degree in Military Science and a Master’s degree in Education, accomplishments that reflected his dedication and discipline. He served with distinction in the United States Air Force as a Staff Weather Officer and Meteorologist, rising to the rank of Lt. Colonel. He received an honorable discharge on September 1, 1993, at Langley Air Force Base in Virginia.
Beyond his military career, Jerry found joy in working with his hands and creating things of lasting beauty. He was a woodworker who crafted furniture and church pews, and he also enjoyed refinishing antiques. He loved gardening during his time in Spokane, Washington. Jerry embraced life with curiosity and adventure, traveling throughout the world, including Europe, Russia, New Zealand, Australia, and Brazil. Among the cherished memories of his life was marrying his beloved wife in Athens, Greece.
Those who knew Jerry will remember his spirit as much as his accomplishments. He was a jokester, pleasant to be around, and someone who made an impact on every person he met. He was generous to the core, the kind of man who would give you the shirt off his back. Of all that he achieved in life, what mattered most to him was being a son, brother, father, and husband.
The love he gave to his family and the steady presence he offered them will remain a lasting gift in their lives.
Jerry is survived by his wife, Roseann Thornberry, with whom he shared 45 years of marriage. He also leaves behind his daughter, Michele Thornberry; his son, Michael Thornberry, and Magnolia Thornberry; his sister, Peggy Holland; and his brother-in-law, Robert Heilman, and Sally Heilman. He was a proud grandfather to Maggie, Nikki, Mike, Morgan, and Maya, and a loving great-grandfather to Eli, Liam, and Asher, with another great-grandchild on the way. The love he gave to his family and the steady presence he offered them will remain a lasting gift in their lives.
He was preceded in death by his father, Paul Thornberry; his mother, Wilma Thornberry; and his sister, Paulet Stagg.
Jerry’s life was one of service, generosity, humor, and love. He will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
