John Thomas Darro, known to family and friends as “Jack,” passed away peacefully September 1st 2025, leaving behind a legacy of strength, service, and love. He was born on April 20, 1940, in Atlantic City, New Jersey, to Katherine Muriel Herbert and Jack Petrie. When Jack was just a year old, his father left, but his stepfather, Ed Darro, lovingly stepped into the role of fatherhood and raised Jack as his own. Jack carried the Darro name with honor and pride throughout his entire life. At just 17 years old, with his mother’s written consent, Jack enlisted in the United States Navy. He went on to serve with distinction as part of the elite Underwater Demolition Team, Class of 1958. These teams, known as the forerunners of today’s Navy SEALs, endured some of the most grueling and demanding training the military had to offer, forging warriors capable of overcoming any obstacle. Jack carried this spirit of resilience and courage throughout his life. He remained in active duty until his honorable discharge on January 20, 1961, and was highly recommended for re-enlistment—a testament to his dedication and skill. As the Navy creed reminds us, “I will not fail,” Jack also embodied those words in service to his country and his loved ones. On September 27, 1967, Jack and Alys Penelope Hamilton welcomed their son, John Porter Darro, into the world, this is the beginning of jacks most cherished role as a father. Over the years, he wore many hats—sailor, protector, provider, and mentor. He made sacrifices for the freedoms we enjoy today and lived a life guided by honor and loyalty. Jack was a man of passion and spirit. He loved the ocean—especially the shores of Hawaii and anywhere the Pacific touched the land. He enjoyed a good card game, the thrill of gambling, a glass of iced tea, and the company of a beautiful woman. Jack had an immense love for animals, from loyal dogs to the sea life he so admired; he treated every creature with kindness and respect, seeing them as part of the great family of life. Above all, he was devoted to his family. He was an honorable son, brother, father, uncle, grandfather, and great-grandfather who cared deeply for those closest to him. He is survived by his brother, Paul Aslanian and Sister-in-Law Lori, Nephews David, Michael and Luke& his niece Vienna. His only son, John; his grandchildren, Michael and Kristina; and his great-grandsons, Dante and Jack, who were the joy of his later years. His memory will live on in the stories, laughter, and love he shared with his family. Jack Darro will be forever loved, deeply missed, and never forgotten. His strength, his spirit, and his devotion to both his family and his country remain an enduring legacy. "Fair winds and following seas, sailor. We have the watch.”
