Sharon Sprowls Reed
Sharon Reed was born in Elk City, OK on February 13, 1939 to
James Kenneth Sprowls and Arthurene Bruton Sprowls. She was
salutatorian of her high school graduating class. Sharon went to
Oklahoma City University on a General Motors Academic
Scholarship, majoring in vocal music. She became a soloist with the
Oklahoma City Symphony performing in “Hansel and Gretel,”
“Carmen,” and other operas. She won many awards sponsored by
the National Association of Teachers of Singing including Regional
Singer of the Year and national runner up.
She married John A. Reed on June 29, 1961. They taught at the
Interlochen Arts Academy in Interlochen, Michigan; Del Mar College
and Wichita State University. They toured together with the Robert
Shaw Chorale and both performed with the Sante Fe Opera. Later
Sharon became a computer programmer and systems analyst. She
worked in that capacity with BlueCross/Blue Shield in Kansas, the
Kansas State Treasurer’s Office and the Hertz Rent-a-Car national
headquarters in Oklahoma City until her retirement.
She passed peacefully on April 23, 2019 in Prescott, AZ.
Sharon is survived by her husband, John A. Reed, Prescott AZ; son,
Richard C. Reed, Prescott AZ; daughter, Rhonda Clure, Newbury
Park CA; and grand daughter, Megan Tabor, Newbury Park CA.
